Three hours of fishing, five huge fish hooked, two big canal tuna caught, well almost anyways. One giant Jack Crevalle was officially landed in this action packed adventure of fishing from the shore using large pinfish as bait.
I absolutely love catching jacks. They hit hard and swim powerfully fast, especially the huge ones. When these fish were hitting the pinfish I was fishing with they were swimming at high speeds. Unfortunately several of the bites I had were so close to the pilings that the fish had the advantage. Actually, given the space I was fishing in, the odds were not in my favor at all.
Gear and Rigging:
Reel: Penn Pursuit 2 6000
Rod: Ugly Stik Big Water medium/heavy seven foot
Main line: 50 lb braid
Leader: 60 lb mono
Hook size and type: 5/O circle
Bait: Four to six inch long pinfish

I've seen these very large schooling trevalles over the past few months in this particular marina several times. The best opportunity to get a glimpse of them is definitely in the morning when the are most actively feeding. The marina holds a lot of bait fish; green back shiners and schools of glass minnows are commonly seen in the area.
This fishing trip occurred between the hours of 10:30AM and 1:30PM underneath a very overcast sky during the month of March. I usually fish around daylight from about 6:30AM to about 10. This particular morning I woke up late, looked outside and thought "today will be good fishing most of the day as long as it stays overcast". I had a bucket full of live pinfish left over from a couple of nights before that I'd been keeping alive. So, I decided to give the marina a try. Right now there is a really good chance of catching snook in the marina. I was hoping to hook up with either jack crevalles or snook.
This will be a fishing trip I'll never forget!
